Emrah Karakus

I am a Ph.D. candidate in sociocultural anthropology with minors in gender and women’s studies and geography. For my dissertation project, I focus on the lives of queer and transgender Kurds in Turkey, exploring how Turkey’s longstanding war with the PKK has shaped sexual politics, intimacies, and subjectivities alongside the emergent regimes of security in the country. For my ongoing ethnographic study, I received a Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant in 2019. I received my MSc degree from University College London’s Security Studies program as a Jean Monnet Scholar after completing my BA in International Relations at Istanbul Kultur University. My research interests include sexuality and nationalism, control societies and security studies, politics of affect and intimacy, poststructuralism, queer anthropology, ethnographic theories of ethics and value.
