Atacan Atakan

Atacan Atakan is a PhD student in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies with minors in History and Gender and Women’s Studies. His dissertation research examines the history of childhood during the late Ottoman Empire (1800-1918). It specifically focuses on the ways in which children’s sexuality, gender identity, and corporeality were reconceptualized, reconfigured, and represented under the influence of modernization, nationalism, and Islam. Besides the Ottoman history of childhood, other research interests of him are social and cultural history of the late Ottoman Empire, Ottoman women’s movement, theories of sexuality and gender, nationalism, political Islam, and body politics.
